Not all who wander are lost - America, days 1-5

This is my first travelling journal on my blog. And my first post in English. That is, because I thought that maybe a few people who are not exactly fluent in German want to read these series.

Anyway, I went to the USA and Canada for a duration of 2 weeks with 18 other people from the age of 16 to 26. I had the time of my life there and the memories will stay forever. I am actually really sad it had to be over so soon and I would love to go back right now. Instead of that, I just will relive my precious moments while writing them down and look at my pictures. I hope you enjoy reading about my adventures. Let's get started.

 DAY 1 - Monday, July 6th, 10.04 pm - Travelling to Germany

Somewhere between Nürnberg and Frankfurt. The austrian part of the Jugendlager is sitting in a train. Bottles of german beer are standing in front of every one of us. We are in this train since 4 hours now, we are chatting, laughing and with that, probably annoying the hell out of the other passengers. Most of us still can't believe that Jugendlager starts tomorrow. I look forward to a lot of English, a bunch of new people and exciting experiences.

DAY 2 - Tuesday, July 7th, 7.18 pm (european summer time - no idea, what the time in the US is right now) - A long, long flight

Time till arrival - 2 hours and 52 minutes. That's what the display says, which is in front of me,built into Anna's seat. Anna is sitting right in front of me, and we agreed on the fact, that sitting gets a bit uncomfortable and exhausting after 8 hours. The thing is, our plane was standing in Frankfurt for 2 hours before we even left for Detroit (with us inside), because of technical difficulties. Besides that, I have to say that the flight was really luxurious. We got a lot of snacks, drinks and a delicious lunch, sleeping masks, blankets, pillows, earphones and even wet, warm tissues to refresh ourselves. The 3 movies I already watched and the music they have here is also great. If we reach our next flight to Cleveland is written in the stars, because of the delay and because we have to get our suitcases again and send them away, and we also have to pass a few controls at the airport. I am also thinking about the evening plans in Salem. A bonfire, getting-to-know-you-games, a cook-out and jetlag? I wonder how that will work out. Anyway, I will read now for a bit. Haven't done that at all today.

DAY 3 - Wednesday, July 8th, 2.35 pm (local time)

We reached our second flight yesterday, it was no drama at all. I mean, we were totally tired in the evening and got to bed at 3 am (european time), but today in the morning, we felt alright again. We already got a bit of an impression of the "American Lifestyle", for example hot dogs, pancakes, red plastic cups, but the main thing are the surroundings here, because they are exactly as you imagine them. Everything is super wide, typical cottages, long roads, much wood. It is exactly like that on the farm we are on right now. A big swimming pond, geese, fireplaces, sheep, a red stable and zipline to jump into the pond. The people here are really living the good life.

For a house and a garden like that you would have to pay a fortune in Austria! We talked a lot about the differences of our countries already today (guns, jodeling, beer,..). Later today there will be line-dancing, let's see, how we're coping with that. ;)

DAY 5 - Friday, July 10th, 5.55 pm - Amish farm, Niagarafalls and big party

Yesterday, there was a lot going on, so I didn't have the time to write. In the morning we packed our stuff and left our sleeping place at the Salem Saxon Club. We then drove for over an hour to get to an Amish farm and take a tour through a typical house there. This whole thing felt like travelling into the past, the people are really nice and they can cook superb, but they don't have a clue about the world outside of their own. We showed our buggy driver some euros and he was insanely fascinated that other currencies besides dollars even exist!

After we bought yummy jams and petted a lot of different baby animals (rabbits, cats, dogs), we went to eat at an amish restaurant, which is called Der Dutchman.
We had dinner the Saxon Club in Youngstown after a tour through their beautiful museum and the room where they hold the Heimattag (in this facility, not even half of the people from Dinkelsbühl would have the possibility to sit down).

After we arrived at the hotel where we would be sleeping that night, we went swimming in the indoor pool, got some drinks from Starbucks had a hotel party at the canadian girls' room. We had a looot of fun there until about 2 in the morning.

Today we drove with a lot of elderly people from Germany or Austria who are living in the US now for a while, to Canada. Our first stop were the famous Niagara falls. They were kinda impressive and gave us a good shower. Now we are at a new hotel, where a lot of other saxons are staying as well. In 20 minutes we are leaving for a country evening, that is why we are all wearing plaid shirts.
